Abstract: While the productivity paradox has now recently been officially obvious dead, the argument and the evidence for this assertion are at a macroeconomic level. What has become less carefully examined is a microeconomic effect of new developments in ICT within the productivity of office and knowledge staff. There is a great assumption, conveniently seen in a large number of advertisements intended for mobile technology, that multi-tasking, WiFi connected laptops, Blackberrys, smart phones etc are good for business and get people to more effective and productive. This may be true a number of the time and there is certainly some (albeit limited) exploration which helps claims that these technologies enhance productivity. On the other hand there are also growing concerns that, in certain environments, these technology may actually lessen productivity in both the short and the long term. This conventional paper examines this problem and study to date and proposes a framework for further investigation on this phenomenon.

1 ) 1 A multitasking globe

In August 2007 a video entitled " A Perspective of Modern-day Students” was posted on Youtube1. The video incorporates a series of views of students in a modern lecture theater. As the camera converts to each pupil in turn, they holds up a card or a laptop displaying a personal concept such as " I dedicate three . 5 hours per day on-line” or perhaps " I will read 8 books this year”. One card simply says " I are a Multi-tasker”. In another video in the same vein, a black and white colored photograph of an old fashioned class room from early on in the last 100 years is proven. The accompanying text states that the type of learning represented was designed for individuals that would dedicate their lives working in a factory on the production range. A clear subtext in both of these videos (and many others conveniently found on the Internet) is that present students will probably be working in a multicareer, multi tasking world which schools and universities have to re-invent their pedagogy in order to prepare them for this.

You will discover two aspects to the sights proffered in these videos. Initial, it is implied that multi tasking in the classroom with multiple press, computer allowed self and group learning is a better form of pedagogy than the traditional teaching approach where the entire class is required to focus on and attempt to absorb some of what the teacher is saying. Second, computer system enabled self and group learning will develop young peoples' multitasking expertise and that they are the skills they may need in today's and tomorrow's workplaces. These types of ideas reflect the view that multitasking is not only a pattern in the workplace, but the assumption that multitasking is a better and more effective technique of working than more traditional single-task-focused forms of activity.

This change is readily visible within the computing time. Forty years in the past green screens and foolish terminals tended to restrict all those office or knowledge staff fortunate enough to have access to a pc at the time to a single task. The principles of technological management and work design proposed by Taylor (2003) back in the 1920s, which engaged training staff in discrete tasks and supervising individuals tasks cautiously, were adapted for the pc age. By the mid eighties however , graphical user interfaces, through the metaphor of the office, and later web browsers, facilitated multitasking in a variety of ways by having multiple windows wide open on display at once to hyper backlinks and instantaneous messaging.
